New Zealand Cruise

Our New Zealand cruise started in Sydney and then to Melbourne and then to Tasmania.  I've covered those stops under the Australia cruise blog. The pic below shows our trip.

So, according to the cruise itinerary shown below,  after Burnie, Tasmania we have two days at sea (January 11 and 12) , as it's quite a ways from Burnie to New Zealand, and the we have a day just cruising up and down Milford Sound and then another day cruising around Doubtful Sound.  I was quite looking forward to seeing both sounds as we'd run into people on past cruises who compared them to the Norwegian Fjords saying the New Zealand Sounds were much more majestic.  So I really wanted to see them.

I, until just about two minutes ago, thought that "sounds" are what New Zealanders call Fjords. This isn't entirely the case. This website explains the difference.

So guess what??? The weather went to hell...we never got to see either of the sounds. Instead we had four sea days trying to avoid the shitty weather.  I can't even remember what we did on those days...drank a lot I suppose.  I do recall reading two or three novels so maybe that's what I did.

The weather on the ship wasn't that bad as the captain was avoiding the storms quite well so at least we were able to hang out by the pool and relax (as if we need more relaxing!) And they did have a good jogging  track (walking track for me) on the deck above the pool so a person could spend a bit of time up there each day. Kind of handy to try and burn off yesterday's calories.
